Granted I'm no author, so this review won't win any Pulitzers. In fact, I had to double-check that I spelled "Pulitzer" correctly. I admit it freely, I read Twilight. I enjoyed it for what it was; a light, easy read which took me back a decade...okay TWO...to my teenage years. Stephenie Meyer got a lot of flack about her abilities as a writer, but she never claimed to be a Poet Laureate and while the literary elite of the world snicker at her "little books" she's laughing all the way to the bank. I can't help but feel this author is trying too hard for Meyers-like fame. I caught glimpses of reviews that warned me this was much along the same lines as the Twilight series only the "love" shared by the main characters is not so chaste. I was prepared for some easy-reading and a little bit of a plot. But what I found just leaves me, well, annoyed. Disclaimer: I'm only about 80% finished with the first book, I'm not even sure if the others are out yet? I was NOT prepared for the striking similarities that I found between the two book series. If you're like me and cannot help but dwell on things once you notice them, I warn you - READ NO FURTHER if you're planning on reading these, it'll ruin them for you as it did me. I know it seems SUPER PICKY, but these are just the main things that stood out glaringly. I'm not even mentioning the little subtleties in the writing or plot (ahem, going down south to see her mother and boyfriend has to come along). Anyway, here's my list: TWILIGHT Edward Height: Tall Body: Well Built Hair: Copper, messy Wallet: Rich Family: Adopted Personality: Brooding, Secretive Other Attributes: *Repeatedly tells Bella to stay away 'cos he's bad news *Buys Bella a car which pisses her off *Wants to drink Bella's blood ...SHADES OF GREY Christian Height: Check Body: Check Wallet: Check Family: Check Personality: Check *Ditto with Ana *Ditto with Ana *Wants to spill Ana's blood, or at least mark her up a bit And now our heroines Bella Body: Slender Hair: Long brown hair Wallet: Middle-class, all-American girl Family: Hair-brained Mom, trust-worty dad BFF: A dark-skinned guy pines for her, she just wants to be friends Vehicle: A rusty old beater that she loves Other Attributes: *Thinks she's average looking, but is pretty *Clumsy *Insecure about herself *Virgin Anastasia Body: Check Hair: Check Wallet: Check Family: Check BFF: Check Vehicle: Check Other Attributes: *Check *Check *Check *Check I rest my case. Yet I'm still reading it. If I sit too long wondering what that says about me I may need a therapist.
