Great keyboard, easily overlooked flaws
I bought the green version, but seeing as it's the same case, I'm going to post my review here as well.
Well first I just want to say, that basically all keyboard reviews for ipads are less than 5 stars, for the nice ones anyway. People have to keep in mind that when a 30$ keyboard gets 5 star reviews, the price is usually a huge factor in that. Now that being said, because of these low scores on all the higher end keyboards (ie. this, logitech ultrathin, zagg folio / slimbook) I felt like no matter what I bought I would be unhappy with it. Well I had seen this at best buy and decided to bite the bullet and go for it, seeing as it was the only one I had physically typed on already. I have to admit, this surpassed every one of my expectations. I have only two real problems with it:
1.) No backlight. I know that a lot of covers aren't backlit, but a lot of them do. For the price, it would be nice even if we just had one color and brightness to choose from. This isn't a huge problem, considering how close the iPad sits to the keys anyways, but for people who "hunt and peck" this could be an issue.
2.) The viewing angles. In all honesty, this really sn't the biggest deal in the world but living in the digital/social age one would expect the ability to change angle at which the device sits. The only time I really notice this is when I'm laying down and would like to tilt it more towards me. Again, not a big problem but a slight design flaw nonetheless.
That pretty much covers the only two problems I've found so far, neither of which are dealbreakers. The screen sits close enough to the keys where backlighting isn't a necessity, and the viewing angle is very obtuse (ha, see what I did there?). But I've had this keyboard for a few short days and already I love it. The good FAR outweighs the bad:
1.) The keyboard: the keys are VERY satisfying and comfortable to type on. They are very close to, if not exactly, full-sized island keys that are ever-so-slightly concaved to help minimizing slipping and minimizing fatigue during long typing sessions. Flat keys tend to irritate pressure points on the tips of your fingers when used too long. They keys are weighted like a real keyboard, if even a little more so than usual. The actuation force required to press each key is 60g, which is 10 more than average desktop computer keyboards. This may seem like a problem at first glance, but having a keyboard being so thin, higher actuation force gives the illusion of being on a full-sized keyboard. Travel time is good as well, nothing feels cramped on this keyboard, and I never have to look at the keys to see if i'm in the right position to hit a punctuation mark or number.
2.) Portability: At first the biggest issue I had when searching for a keyboard was finding something that a.) was also a protective case, and b.) didn't weigh TOO much. I was very afraid that the keyboard would weigh down my "light as a feather" iPad Air 2. After actually putting this on my iPad, I was shocked with just how little weight it actually added to it. This is actually one of the lighter keyboard cases on the market, weighing in at 14 oz, only .88 of a pound! Most cases are far heavier than that. Also not to mention the iPad it self seems very easy to remove from the case in the event I want to leave the keyboard at home, but being as light as it is I don't see that happening.
3.) Special functions: This really does have quite a few special touches to this keyboard. For one, there is a row of special keys above the number keys that are specifically for controlling the functions of the iPad. There's a key for displaying all open apps, to use spotlight search, to bring up the touch keyboard, changing volume, skipping songs, etc. Another thing that's really nice, is when you prop up the iPad and it makes contact with the magnetic strip, it automatically turns on the keyboard. Finally, the case folds over itself. So the iPad's bottom is touching the face of the keyboard, so that you can still use the iPad as a tablet. It sounds like it would be really bulky, having the keyboard AND the fold beneath the tablet. However, I have to admit it does fold VERY thin. I would actually prefer this to something akin to the Zagg Slimbook, where the keyboard actually detaches from the tablet. This way the tablet stays in the case, but you can still hold it flat. This was one of the best, most overlooked feature this keyboard case has to offer.
All in all, this keyboard is an amazing choice. I gave it 4/5 because of the backlight and the viewing angle issues, but to me neither was worth a whole star each. I wrote this entire review on the keyboard and haven't experienced any key repetitions (pressing a key once and having it register twice), and when backspacing you don't have to repeatedly tap the delete key to avoid over deleting. All in all, this is the best case i've ever had. I've owned the ZaggFolio for Galaxy Note 8.0 and while at the time felt amazing, after using the Logitech Type+ I've found that the Zaggfolio cannot even begin to hold a candle to this keyboard. If you have the money and want a solid keyboard with excellent keyboard functionality and interface navigation, this is the keyboard for you. While backlighting and multiple viewing angles are not an option, those downfalls are VERY easily overlooked. Pick this up if you can, you will love it!
