I hope I can help everyone and I hope the company appreciates not receiving as many returns. You don't need to cut the pipe to adjust the length of the rack. What you need to do is cut one of the soft plastic end caps that goes on the end of the thinnest pipe. 1.) Cut the cap down just enough so you can inset it into the spring. You will insert the cap by pushing it into the side of the spring. The cap should look like it's wedged in the spring. (see photo) 2.) Next, insert the thin pipe into the spring and into the cap. (see photo) 3.) You can now adjust the length. Hold the spring in one hand and the thin pipe in the other hand and twist to adjust the length (like using a corkscrew.) 4.) Once you adjusted to the right length, insert the spring+thin pipe into the large pipe per the original directions. You're done! Enjoy your rack.
