This is the perfect trash can. I love combining the recycling and waste into one bin. In my small kitchen, I need all the space I can get. I love the lid, which closes nicely, stays closed just fine, and I don't have to look at or smell any of the stuff inside. Also great for pet parents who have to deal with overturned trash all the time. The animals haven't even noticed the trash since I purchased this one. I also like that it is taller, so I don't have to bend down. Surprisingly, it holds a lot. The bins are narrow, so you think they won't hold that much, but they do. As far as the liners, you absolutely do not have to use the custom liners. They are really nice and fit perfectly, but they are expensive for something you are literally throwing in the trash. So I still buy 13 gal bags in a 200 ct box from the warehouse store that I have used for years, and they work just fine. Just tuck the excess into the hole in the side of the inner bin, then when you put the lid on top, the bag hides just fine. So don't let the cost of the liners detract from purchasing this beautiful trash bin. Update after 1 year: Having noticed that some reviewers still don’t believe you can use the more economical kitchen bags from the warehouse store, I’m providing some photos of how you can. I promise that the excess will not be viewable, and it does stay tucked in, even when you remove the recycling bin. I’ve been using this bin for a year now and I have never had a problem with it. Notice in the photos, there is hole at the top of the bin, insert the bag and pull all the excess through the hole so the bag is tight around the rim. I also frequently press down on the garbage to make sure it is as full as possible before I dump it. But even then, it is true that the bag is only a little over half full. I then add the trash from all the other rooms to fill it. I should also mention that this is for small households. Mine is a single person household and I go through 1 trash bag per week. I do have to dump the recycling about 3 times a week, but I don’t use a trash bag for recycling. And I do break down and fold larger boxes in order to fit them in the bin. I probably would not purchase this size if there were more than 2 people in the house
