We bought this pet door a few years ago when we adopted our dog and needed to keep her out of the hallway and our bedroom. Over the years, we bought three to use in various doorways of our home and we were super pleased with everything about them. They are very durable, reasonably attractive and easy to use. When we had our baby last year, we kept using the gates to give the dog and baby space from each other. I'd looked over the gate very carefully, looking for ways it would pose a risk to the baby and overlooked one VERY important aspect-- the little knob that opens the cat door twists off and that knob is the perfect size to block a baby's wind pipe. I discovered this when my daughter had nearly twisted the knob off and I have no doubt it was heading for her mouth. I feel sick to my stomach when I think about what could have happened if I hadn't had my eye on her. I gave this product 5 stars because it's an AWESOME pet door and would NEVER take away stars because I'm letting a child interact with the gate (I'm also not one of those parents who is trying to raise her kid in a bubble but this is a really clear choking hazard.) We are still using it as a pet gate, but if I was purchasing new gates, I would get one specifically for children because of this knob. As a modification, we took the knob off altogether and shut the little door with zip ties. I've never uploaded a picture with a review in my life before but I would hate for someone to discover this issue too late.
