An in-depth review of a great strap!
*UPDATES AND IMPORTANT WARNING AT THE END OF THE REVIEW* (Original review:) I am very pleased with the Rainbowimaging Strap. I'm a wedding photographer, and instead of changing lenses I usually carry two camera bodies with me to eliminate wasted time. Up until now, I used the stock Canon straps - they are well-made and comfortable but crossing two over your body is really inconvenient, especially while wearing a suit. This strap changes everything! GEAR The strap manages decently: Camera Number 1: a Canon 5D Body with grip, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L Lens and Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash Camera Number 2: a Canon EOS-3 Film Camera with grip, Canon 17-35mm F/2.8 L Lens (I shoot film). PROS - Very comfortable - Excellent price-point - Allows for dual camera wielding - Very easy to switch between cameras, easy to bring camera to eye-level - Splits into a single camera strap - Has been tested working with both OEM Canon battery grips AND 3rd-party grips (Jenis, Neewer and Zeikos) BUILD Overall, I am pleased with the construction of this strap. At this price point, I really couldn't have asked for more. The straps seem sturdy, and the hardware is no worse than what you would find on a canon gear bag. The safety carabiners are similar to these: Safety Carabiners, but smaller, and you would be hard-pressed to encounter one coming undone by itself. The plates that attach to the camera seem sturdy enough - a little light-weight but still strong. *SEE UPDATE* FUNCTION/DESIGN This fits me like a glove - I'm 5'10" and broad-chested, and it sits nice and comfortably even after a full wedding (12+ hours). The two clasps are easily adjusted (by a second person) at the back to control the length of the straps that hang down, and the front clip is easily adjusted on-the-fly for comfort, so don't be put off by my measurements. Everything is adjustable enough to allow for most builds. I really enjoy being able to use dual cameras easily now - gone are the days of slinging one of each shoulder and walking as though each step could make one of them slip to the floor. After a little use, you will figure out how best to attach the cameras so that they slide easily to eye-level when taking a picture. As mentioned above, it is really easy to separate the harness into two straps for those times when you need just one camera - this saves me from keeping redundant camera straps around. CONS/MANUFACTURER SUGGESTIONS - The buckles on the front and the logo are BRIGHT yellow. Personally, the name of the wedding photography game is to remain as inconspicuous as possible. Now I had seen from the picture that the buckles were yellow, so this came as no surprise, but more than likely I will be purchasing some black lacquer/nail-polish to cover them up. Either way, it would be nice to have options for the color...the rest of the hardware is black and I knew about this beforehand so no points were removed. - It would be nice to have more attachment abilities on the harness, perhaps some loops on the main straps at the front? I believe there is one on each side, but seeing as they are not advertised as load-bearing loops, I'm not going to chance it. - While the harness keeps the cameras at a good hip height, there is nothing to keep the cameras close to your side. I would be very pleased to see a compatible belt come with this in the future, or as a separate accessory purchase. The two Lowepro belts available here on Amazon (Lowepro Technical Belt) might be too wide to loop the straps through at waste level in my opinion - something thinner would be necessary to prevent the cameras from freely sliding up when needed. - Did not come with instructions, but really I didn't feel as though the product warranted them. OVERALL Highly recommended. This is by far the best dual strap around at this low price! If the manufacturer would offer color options for the hardware this would be even better - but barring that I'll be getting the spray-paint out this weekend! -------------------------------------------------------- *UPDATE* Well it seems that I have discovered a manufacturing flaw. On the mounting plates, a piece of rubber is glued on to help grip the bottom of your camera. On a lighter set-up, this isn't a problem, but after shooting another 12-hour wedding (this time outdoors in 90° weather), the glue holding this rubber piece started to melt and slip to the side. This means that instead of sitting flush, the rubber piece was at a little bit of an angle. This isn't a huge deal - I ended up using some super-strength NON-EXPANDING glue, and it now sits where it should no matter what the weight/weather. An easy fix, but it would be nice if they used a stronger glue in the first place. *UPDATE AND IMPORTANT INFO* Well, I seem to be one of the lucky ones - over a year of use and I still have had no additional issues with this strap. That said, it seems as though quality control is a notable issue, and many people are reporting broken clips and resulting damage to gear. These reports SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. The reports are not limited to Amazon either, I have seen then in several photography forums. Due to a lack of official response (I emailed Rainbowimaging), I will be leaving this warning up. Despite having had a good experience myself, I feel as though having the top review spot leaves me the responsibility of providing a well-balanced review, and these reports of shoddy clips should not be disregarded. --------------------------------------------------------
