Works better than expected! Great reception. Bought this for 11 year old. No smartphone app needed for set up at all! It's completely stand alone with Speedtalk SIM card ($5). One negative is the inability to block/limit incoming or outgoing calls. My child receives incoming calls from strangers which is dangerous. Train your child not to answer unknown phone numbers. Also, phone numbers entered through contacts can inadvertently be erased by the child with the sensitive touch screen. There is no way to lock them once entered. Teach them to make calls through Contacts or a direct call (entering the whole phone number with area code.
