Let's be honest. It's a chunk of foam designed to elevate your feet. But I've found that not only does it do the job, but it reflects enough heat to make it useful for my home office in the basement. I don't run a heater or anything, but I didn't find that the plastic alternatives worked well for me. This product is just pillow-like enough to both elevate the feet and keep warmth where it should be. And it has worked well though both the summer and winter. It wasn't until the winter that I noticed how important it was. The foam kept it isolated from the floor, meaning it didn't transmit the cold. It's hard to explain, but it has worked very well. I don't love how much it attracts pet hair, but between a shedding cat and wolf-like-dog, I've survived. Personally, I'd recommend it over a hunk of plastic meant to do the same job, but I work in socks. If you wear shoes, you might not like this as much.
