Sturdy, long lasting, lifetime backpack with a warranty. What more could you ask for?
****4 year update****
I've has this as my only backpack now for 4 years. The lifetime warranty Osprey provides makes buying another backpack completely unnecessary. The bag still looks new in spite of it being my carry-on for multiple trips, my hiking pack for multiple camps, my daily school bag for the first couple years and now my cycling-to-work bag a couple times a week. It's held up beautifully and I'd purchase it again a million times over, especially since the price has dropped since i first bought it.
****original review****
I had to track this info down so I thought I'd share.... The difference between this pack (daylite plus) and the regular daylight model is that this model has an extra 7L to its total volume & there is padding in the inner pocket for insulating a hydration pack (not included) or laptop/tablet. Please read on....
To dig into the details of this this is a little bit overwhelming, i honestly didn't know a backpack could be so complex!
Have to start somewhere :
First off this back has a slightly rigid "frame" to the back to help it keep its shape, this is done by a kind of 'boning' similar to what would be in a corset, holding the edges of the part that goes against your back. It's weird if you ask me, but not uncomfortable so whateves.
There are 7 pockets from the outside, with a few inner pockets lining the inside of some of them. The two mesh pockets on the sides are large but loose at the top. You could fit a waterbottle but if it is at all top heavy it might fall out on a hike.
Luckily there's a hydration pack pocket... Wait... Which one is it? I don't even know... Because there's two pockets they could intend to be used with a hydration pack but it's really unclear which one you should use! See... The mesh panel that keeps your back cool is also a pocket of sorts. Inside there's a ventilated piece of foam padding, and at the top is a small clip, could this be for holding the hydration pack up? I dunno... But there's a tag above it that implies you do, it's embroidered "H2O", the letters are upside down, but it's there.
Then there's what I'd tracked down on the Osprey website and other places: the pocket inside the main pocket on this 'plus' model is insulated for a laptop or *hydration pack*.... Well it's definitely there, pretty thick insulation too... Okay, but, there's no opening to pull the hose through from that pocket except through the zipper and if this is where it's supposed to go, why is that upside down H2O tag on the backside mesh pocket? Confused yet? Me too. Osprey, what up?
So while I'm sure I can decide which place I prefer to put my water on my own anyway, let's venture onward in this review....
The clips you see on the sides, that seem to be holding a panel against the pack, are in fact a kind of expandable pocket, which even has a pocket on it. It's this clipped up pocket that has a webbed-like structure that expands in a way reminiscent of jaws of something in "Alien vs Predator". Don't worry, this is way cooler than some folks might think. I can fit an extra water bottle or sweatshirt in there and cinch it up real good, real easy.
There's two more pockets on this beast. The small zip pocket that runs vertical on the outside face of the expanding alien-jaw-flap (good for a phone, keys lip balm, etc) and the zippered pocket just above the expanding alien-jaw-flap that contains separate mesh compartments inside for organizing small things.
I got this pack thinking I could somehow attach a yoga mat to it for biking to class. Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure that out yet, the way I thought it would work won't actually so hopefully I can figure out another way. I'll toss up a photo if I do.
