First of all, my wife and I are the typical story of one liking a soft bed, the other liking a hard surface. So, there's no way to make us both happy. Yes, that includes this cover layer. However, as the one who likes sleeping on a piece of plywood, I found this as a viable compromise. We put in top of a sleep number mattress, mine was still firm (70) and my wife soft (30). The wife woke up for the first time in months without aches and pains in her back and hips. I had a hard time getting to sleep the first night (which is unusual), but I think I can adjust. I'll update if that changes. Bottom line, it makes the surface softer without the losing the firmness or softness of the underlying mattress.
