Updated again*** 1/29/2019***, Updated*** 1/2/19 **** (Summary: All issues fixed!)
Updated 1/29/2019: Summary all issues with charging the pencil fixed. Thanks Zugu!
Zugu's owner reached out to me after reading my review below. He promised that they were working to fix the issue and that they'd ship out the redesigned case in a few weeks.
True to his word, I just received the new case and it works perfectly. I'd buy their products again, just based on this level of customer service alone. The fact they they made an awesome Ipad case is just icing on the cake at this point.
Should be 10 stars; can't say enough good things about the product or the company!
Updated 1/2/2019: Taking it down to 3 stars. I'm now seeing why people were saying that the pencil isn't charging. Sometimes it does and other times it doesn't. Hopefully Zugu is reading this. If they can fix this issue, I would gladly take it back to a 5 because, except for this problem, it's still an excellent case. I do have a hypothesis as to why this might be happening. Obviously, it could be the case material and/or wall thickness interfering with the charging field, but I think I also see a possible alignment issue. I haven't had time to really test this hypothesis, but it looks like the pencil has room to ride up if it isn't firmly seated to the right.
I'll explain. Looking at the pencil, in the charging position with the pencil tip pointing left, the case/ipad in landscape orientation, etc. I noticed that the pencil can be pushed left and thus can ride up the case's slope. This creates a small gap between the pencil and the case wall. I think this may be causing the inconsistency. I doubt that people are accidentally pushing on the pencil. I think the problem may just be that the pencil does not get seated properly in the first place. The Ipad's magnet is so strong that the pencil can attach to the case and still sit too far to the left. Just a hypothesis, but it could be worth looking into. Hopefully, it is just the easier issue of material thickness and hopefully, Zugu fixes it because I really like this case.
The wait for this case was worth it. It's well-designed in every way. I'm a mechanical engineer with a low tolerance for poorly-designed products. These guys did it right. The pencil gets recognized and charges just fine as far as I can tell. (I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about; if this changes, I'll make an update to this review) The fit and finish are fantastic. The adjustable angles feel very solid with the magnetic assist. The holes and button extensions align perfectly and have great tactile feedback. Get it. I don't think you'll have any regrets. I think some of the other reviewers are being super nit-picky. I would rate this case over 5 stars if I could.
