As a physician who has done molecular biology research, choosing the National Geographic product National Geographic DNA Test Kit: Geno 2.0 Next Generation (Ancestry) - Powered by Helix to look into my DNA heritage was an obvious choice. GENO utilizes the Helix platform which looks at far more of your DNA than the competing ancestry products. Next generation sequencing of my exome would have cost 10’s or 100’s of thousands of dollars only a few years ago. The competing platforms use chip arrays that look for the known sequences relating to various characteristics and inheritance. Helix now has ALL of my genes sequenced. This means as time goes forward and scientists uncover new genetic relationships to diseases, behavior, even longevity, my DNA will already be searchable for the relative expressed genes that may have variants of interest. I’m of course interested in my ancestry and in joining the nearly one million other subscribers to the Genographic project and doing a deep dive into where my family came from, but I look forward to the remarkable insights into all kinds of additional information encoded in my DNA. Correct dosing of drugs? Cancer risk? Chances for common aging problems like kidney failure, high blood pressure, arthritis? All of it is there and with the breakthroughs coming when artificial intelligence uncovers combinations of gene variants that play a role, I won’t have to donate more of my DNA to look for them. Just a “simple” search of my data with a computer program will reveal all. The kit was easy to use and the feedback and reporting was simple to understand and fascinating.
