Aeroccino 4 Testing Results
We had the original Nespresso frother, 1 at home and 1 at work. The Nespresso milk frother's offer good results on a more consistent basis that using the frothing wand on our espresso machine. The original units were coated with a non stick teflon or other non stick coating that was subject to breaking down when cleaned. The original unit was wider and provided easier access for cleaning and had a single button for operation. Reading multiple descriptions and reviews, we decided to replace our failed original unit with the Aerocino 4. The Aerocino 3 had marginal reviews and the other knockoffs had the non stick coatings that were failing with use. There are multiple health risks associated with Teflon and other non stick coatings, as reported in the Lancet as early as 1951.
We primarily chose the Nepresso Aeroccino 4 due to interior ceramic coating and our previous experience with our original Nespresso units. Imported knockoffs appeared to all have non stick coatings, we were interested in avoiding. The Aeroccino 4 has a wider base than the original, now with 4 control buttons instead of 1. The base has 4 bright annoying lights that remained lit for 9 minutes after plugged base in. We preferred the original base that had a smaller counter top foot print and no annoying lights, except for activating the single button on the frother cup.
The new frother narrow cup design is more difficult to reach inside to clean than the original wider frother cup design. The 3rd activation base button (cappuccino setting) froths poorly on the Aeroccino 4, however the 4th setting Macchiato produces the original dense foam we preferred with our original unit. We also considered the stainless steel Breville frother without the non stick coating, however many reviews stated issues with single volume cup frothing. We do not always froth 2 cups at the same time, so we ruled the Breville out, despite interest in elimination of a non stick coating. If the new Aeroccino 4 proves to be durable, we will be pleased with the cold milk and macchiato frothing settings. The hot milk and cappuccino settings are not likely to be used after initial testing.
