Beautiful
I bought this after seeing it on Last Week Tonight, and I have to say it's good. Better than I was expecting. It really is a beautiful book.
It works both as a children's books and piece of political satire. The artwork is great, the animal pictures are adorable, the plot is both cute and genuine to not appear political. Further points for the fact that the main characters are gay too. The Mike Pence look alike stink bug is hilarious, though a little on the nose.
Given how easily other attempts to create political children's books *cough liberals under the bed cough* end up looking like they were obviously done by propagandist hacks, this book is a marvel. I would highly recommended it to anyone.
You could read this book with no knowledge of American politics and get as much out of it as someone laughing at stink bug pence and John Oliver and the authors trolling of Mike Pence.
Two detractions. First it's a little sad that the main reason the book features two male characters in love is to troll Mike Pence. The fact that the gay aspect to the books primary purpose is to annoy a deeply homophobic, or at least publicly so, Vice President casts a shadow over what is a beautiful book. And I would like to think people, especially self appointing liberals, aren't only interested in LGBT representation simply because they feel it will irritate a political figures.
Second, I'm not entirely sure the comparisons between being gay and eating crust first or worse sniffing butts is quite the right message to be sending. That trivialises the important part of a persons identity and lived experience that sexuality and relationships provide, and the struggles of the LGBT community broadly.
