The BEST VALUE for a Roborock with a couple of exceptions!
As a previous owner of the Roborock S5 and S6 I was caught a little off guard by the under the radar launch of the S4. After I saw it, I ordered it just to see what could be so different and what corners might have been cut to have a much more appealing price point. After using the S4 I am happy to say the corner cutting was kept to a minimum and it even has a few advantages to the pricier models. However, there are a couple of distinct differences that I will mention that may still warrant the purchase of the more expensive S5/6 depending on your preferences and home layout. First of all let’s talk about what is the same and still awesome about S4. The S4 still has all the same navigation and vacuuming capabilities as the more expensive models. It uses lidar to map your home and the map it creates is just like the S6 which allows the user to divide the home into selectable rooms(S5 does not have this capability.) It also has the same suction power and battery life/size as the S5/S6 plus the improved brush design from the S6. On top of that the S4 has some better features than it’s big brothers such as a much larger dust bin and the location of the main brush moved to get better access. The side brush on the S4 also does not tend to be dragged around like on my S6. On the whole it does just as good of job navigating and vacuuming as the S5 and S6. So what are the downsides. One main difference is the S4 does not come with the mopping module that is included with S5 and 6. Secondly, and maybe more importantly depending on your home is that the S4 is designated for use with only hard floors and low pile carpets. One negative I have noticed as previous reviewer already mentioned as well is that the S4 will usually throw a “main brush jammed” error code at least once a run. The S5 and 6 also have the same problem but the code can be overridden through the app by selecting carpet boost mode. The S4 does not have a carpet boost mode so it will issue the error code and I have to select clean again. Not a complete deal breaker but an annoyance nonetheless. So all in all I would say this is the best value for a Roborock vacuum and the obvious choice as long as you don’t need the mop or have medium/high piled carpets. It is just as capable and in some cases better than the S5/S6. Roborock vacuums offer some of the best performance and features at a fraction of the cost of some of the main name brands like irobot.
