Sanity saver
So, I have no children. I also don't often review things I purchase. I am making an exception for this and one other app.
I was left to watch my nephew, from my sister, for a weekend. He's a little over 3.5 yrs. I quickly discovered how that not only did he require constant stimuli to be entertained, but when he felt he wasn't receiving enough he would release a soul-piercing shriek that was designed, I assume, to quickly remind anyone in the vicinity of who was in charge.
Now I came by this app as a recommendation from my sister. Well to be more precise the company was recommended. I came to this app specifically because it was in the free selection.
My sister is quite opposed to games that will "turn his mind to mush" you see, and this was a last minute thing so I wasn't armed with all the usual tools she has available to keep him entertained without his brain supposedly rotting.
So I have an old smartphone sitting around which I still use on WiFi from time to time. I pulled it out and installed this app and another. Once I put it in front of my nephew I heard the most beautiful thing... Peace.
There are in-app purchases, it is true. After working through the puzzles for a couple dozen minutes the shriek let me know something was awry. I found he had completed everything available on the free section and the game required like, a dollar, to unlock the rest of the puzzles.
That wasn't even something I had to think about. I quickly negotiated my way through the purchase and had my nephew happily solving puzzles and popping balloons.
Now, I'm no child psychologist so I can't speak professionally to whether it actually taught him anything. I can say I, overhearing the game and my nephew, became very familiar with the variety of animals and things featured on the puzzles. So I assume there had to be some associative learning occurring.
Was so pleased that when this was completed and my new overlord demanded more entertainment, I picked up another free app by the same company. I followed a similar process where he was appeased for a short while but soon enough I needed another dollar.
All in all cheaper than an arcade from back in my day, with the added benefit of learning too. But the greatest benefit was that I survived the ordeal to tell my story.
