The fans are very quiet and definitely keep my 17" HP Envy i7 laptop cool! I always use my laptop in a chair, on the couch, or in bed--so I generally use a lap board under it. Even so, without this Cooling Pad, the laptop gets quite hot to the touch after about an hour, as I've read the 17" ones tend to. But--with the fan under it, it's great! I just use the fan all the time as why let it overheat at all? I'm fairly careful, though not obsessively so, with my computers, having had laptops exclusively since around 2000. I've had no problems with the legs on the Cooling Pad bottom bending or breaking off or the two levers that pop up on the top front (to keep the laptop from sliding forward) breaking or failing. I should say too that this is a VERY heavy laptop--close to 5 lbs. If any laptop would break the Cooling Pad due to weight--this would be the one! Luckily, I don't travel with it. All settings function correctly and I fully expected the fans to make a fair amount of some kind of noise, but they don't. They run smoothly, evenly, and quietly even with all of them on and cause no distraction. All you hear is a slight "whirring" sound which sounds like one small fan, not four going! My 17" laptop fits on it just fine but it would work great for a 15" also, with a little space on the sides left over. I read a few bad reviews and gave it some thought--but I'm very glad I bought it! Anything plastic can break if treated roughly, and any product manufacturing line can throw a "lemon" now and then, but I really like this product and if it quit working after a couple years, I'd buy another! It's a very reasonable price to pay compared to overheating an expensive laptop! As with any product, if I got a "lemon" or had issues, I'd simply contact the seller--it has a one year warranty on it
