I've bought this to replace my Nest Gen. 3 when I replaced my AC system. The Nest was no longer compatible to handle a 16 seer with 2 speed heat/cool, heat pump, aux heat, and emergency heat. After some research, I've decided to go with the Ecobee3 Lite. AC systems in most home do not have humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilators, so no reason to waste money on the full blown version. Also, only difference with 3 and 4 is the built in Alexa. The Ecobee3 Lite integraded well with my Smartthings and Google Home. It took me about 1 hour to install (30 reading manual and 30 actual install). I have two systems in my house, one with Ecobee and one with Nest. I have to say that I like the Ecobee3 Lite more than Nest. I do not care for their "smart learning" function because my family does not have a set routine. It works well with the smarthing geo fence with my wife's iPhone and my Samsung S7. Have not touched any thermostat since initial install. All control done with voice via Google home and geo fence.
