Needs to have clicks at the speed changing intervals - and especially at zero!
Great little motor. I'm coming from a 30lb thrust trolling motor, so it's quite the kick. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars, and I think it's a big one - it may even deserve 3 starts, but there is virtually NO indication between the speeds, and quite often, I thought it was on zero, but the blade was still spinning - Newport, please fix this! Put some clicks at the various speeds, and if nothing else, make 0 more defined! You truly cannot tell if the thing is off, it's too quiet - it's a shame because it's a great little unit. Since I bought the unit a couple of weeks ago, I have used it for about 10 hours on Lake Nockamixon in PA.
UPDATE: After using this motor for about 50hrs, I have an update - I still hold firm on the inability to turn to zero and knowing which speed you're actually on, this should really be addressed by Newport Vessels. Unfortunately after only 6 weeks of use, the sleeve collar that is underneath the motor direction clamp, broke - while I was on the water, rendering me to have the motor 2ft+ in the water at all times. I tried duct taping it, but it would not hold.
I called, and subsequently filled out a warranty claim, with Newport and I'll find out what the outcome is. The entire assembly that mounts the motor to the transom is rather cheap and flimsy, I think. With my old 30lbs thrust motor, it was all metal and held up after many years of use amazingly well. I don't see that longevity with this motor - although, I do have to say, and I don't know if this is because I'm coming from an old 30lbs motor, but the motor on this is awesome. The motor seems to be well made, it's powerful, and has pulled me through weeds often.
I will update this review with the outcome of my warranty claim. Lastly, I will say that the person who answered at Newport was professional, knowledgeable and polite. The will be sending me the replacement parts I need to fix it, along with instructions on how to do so.
