DGL - GERD relief without side effects (or rebound)
I have GERD, or more accurately, esophagitis due to a damaged esophageal sphincter. My GI doctor originally prescribed the usual acid blockers, but there were problems. The acid blockers didn't really help, as I didn't have a high acid problem, just a damaged sphincter. Plus, research I did on my own confirmed that low stomach acid levels hinder proper digestion. The biggest problem, however, was stopping the acid blockers. It always caused a rebound effect: true acid reflux for days or even weeks after stopping the pills. My solution: DGL. A nutrition doctor that my wife used recommended to her that I try them. I did and they worked great. They greatly eased the esophageal discomfort, yet did not suppress stomach acid, hence no rebound if I should miss a dose.
A follow-up visit to my GI doc a year later found marked improvement in the state of the damaged sphincter. He assumed that the prescription acid blockers were responsible and was surprised when I told him that I had switched to a DGL formula within 90 days of trying the acid blockers he prescribed. To his credit, he told me to continue with whatever I was doing since it certainly was working. I've been taking Enzymatic Therapy DGL for nearly a decade now, with regular follow-up visits to my gastroenterologist.
There are many brands and varieties of DGL available. I have tried a good number of them and found that I personally prefer the Enzymatic Therapy fructose free chewable tablets. I like licorice a lot, so the flavor was no problem. I prefer the fructose free variety as I don't like "sweets" and the sweeter taste of the "regular" variety didn't appeal to me. My younger daughter, however, hated the fructose free taste and opted for the chocolate flavored ones when she had a temporary bout of GERD some years ago. My older daughter likes the fructose free kind I take, and uses them for the occasional "acid stomach." I have found other brands to taste chaulky or have other "off" flavors. Of course, that's my personal preference. Your taste may well differ.
My recommendation: Watch and/or modify your diet if you are a victim of GERD, and give Enzymatic Therapy DGL's a try. Find the "flavor" you prefer. Of course, you should touch base with your doctor to make sure that he or she has no problem with your experiment. Everybody's problems are different and DGL's are not a universal cure for all GERD-like symptoms.
As for me, Enzymatic Therapy fructose free DGL's are my preferred treatment. They work, they taste great and there are no side effects or rebound effects. They are readily available in nutrition related stores and on the Internet (like at Amazon.com) and are very reasonably priced. I give them a full five star rating.
