Pulitzer Prize stuff
Such predictions are risky, but it's hard to imagine that Guelzo's book won't be the definitive treatment of the Gettysburg battle for years to come. I've lived in Gettysburg for nearly thirty years, and I've read my share of books on the battle. But I've never come across one that is as detailed without being tiresome as this one, largely due to Guelzo's talents as a stylist. Even for one more interested (as I am) in the social than in the military history of the Civil War, this study is riveting. A first rate effort.
