Happiness is a Warm Kotatsu
[UPDATE: Years later, it still works! I also found out years later that there is a dial under the table on the edge of the heater that can control how warm the table gets.]
I lived in Japan for awhile and had a Kotatsu, but had to leave it there due to not being able to ship it home.
A year later, living in the frozen Tundra of the Midwest made me decide it was time for being cozy, warm, and lazy yet somehow more productive again.
The table is quite sturdy, comfortably fits 3 people under it, even has a reversible tabletop (One side is dark gray/tar-colored, the other is light gray/slate) and everything can collapse into each other (ex. When you transition from Winter to Summer, the heater wire can be fit into the table) As for the heater, it's so lovely~ I only have two gripes -- the first being that I wish that it had more options besides On/Off, but I can live with that. (And if I want more options, I can always buy another heater) The second gripe I have is I wish there were better (read: more less crazily priced) options for Kotatsu Futons. I ended up sewing one up myself (which is what is depicted in the picture)
If you decide to get this, don't forget to buy a transformer, don't forget to get cushions, and try not to fall asleep under this table.
Once the Kotatsu has you in it's warm embrace, it takes Herculean Effort to escape its warm bear hug-like embrace.
