I was initially not impressed that the base is plastic. However, the hook is at least metal. I was not ready to permanently install this, but had to give it a quick test. I attached it to my glass shower door, and even without prepping the surface by cleaning it with an alcohol pad first, the suction cup grabbed on VERY strong. So much so that when I tugged on it a bit I could hear the strain on the shower door hinges. I also hung 2 wet towels on it, and that was no problem. It does come with instructions, but one thing i noticed is that it does not explain 2 mystery pieces in the box. It comes with 2 clear pieces of plastic, the same size as the base. On one side of each of these plastic squares is a 3M adhesive sticker. The instructions clearly state not to mount this on a porous surface, as of course the suction cup will not properly grip if there is any air in the mounting material. Therefore, I assume that these pieces are adapters of sorts, to allow one to use the sticker on porous surfaces,and then the suction cup would adhere to the plastic. I hope this is helpful!
