No frills, solid, easy enough for this 36-year-old dude
I have never owned, nor to my recollection, even used a sewing machine before, so I can offer no real comparison for the SINGER 1304. But being just an ordinary dude with basic needs, this machine very much fulfills its purpose. I had long been putting off making curtains for my bedroom's french doors, as the thought of laboring with a needle and thread, along with yards and yards of fabric, seemed far too tedious. My wife even recoiled at the thought. Suddenly a light appeared, Amazon opened its arms, and bestowed upon us the SINGER 1304. The first thing I noticed was the feel of the machine, which is very solid. Stands up to any real power tool in terms of durability and seems capable of long-term use with minimal maintenance. The Quick Start guide (yes, I read instructions) was very handy with the initial setup. The controls, even if you don't have a need for the variety of stitch types, are essentially dummy-proof. Just turn the dial and you're in. The thread loads relatively easy from the top. And the pedal kind of makes it feel like you're using a big machine press. Kind of. The unit operates fairly quietly, too, perfect for when you need to sew your crotch at 2 am without disturbing your neighbors. I haven't had a chance to play around with all of the functions, such as the buttonhole makers, but it seems fairly intuitive. The curtains for the french doors turned out really well, so now my wife and I are looking for other projects to do. Based on the price point, I'd say this is a real value buy. Does everything you need, easy to use, and it (according to me) counts as a power tool.
