All the Reasons You Need...
I’ve been juicing for years, but I ordered this ready-made detox cleanse because I just don’t have the time to make one myself right now. I normally do not write lengthy reviews, but because this is a sizable investment for juice, here goes my (hopefully) helpful thoughts:
DELIVERY—I was impressed. The box actually sat outside in 90 degree summer weather for over an hour before I saw it and the juice was still slushy/frozen.
FRESHNESS—I did NOT put the juice in the freezer. I put it in the fridge and started the following morning. Immediately, I was surprised by how fresh it tasted (nothing like Bolthouse Farms or other bottled juices I’ve tried in the past). I really don’t know how they did it, but it does taste freshly juiced. It was even better than the juice I’ve made and stored and then thawed in the past.
TASTE—There is not one that I didn’t like, but I can see why some reviewers who are not used to fruit and veggie juice fasting would not like it. Americans are used to pasteurized fruit juices that taste like candy. These juices are pretty sweet and yummy, but if you’re expecting them to taste like Capri Sun, you’ll be disappointed. Now, I definitely have my preferences:
--Piney Apple is the best by far, strictly from a taste perspective. It’s like a minty piña colada.
--Greens-The two green ones are pleasant and in no way hard to drink.
--Coconut-(it’s not almond anymore, so don’t pay attention to older reviews about almond drink). I’m not a fan of coconut water or coconut milk, so the dinner drink is my least favorite. BUT it was fresh.
--The root veggies (red one) is pretty good considering it has beet juice in it. For anyone who’s ever juiced before, they know that beet juice overpowers any other juice in the mix. (Not to mention it has a “loosening” effect on the ole’ bathroom situation). But it’s also an excellent detoxifying juice, so I was glad to see it in there.
HUNGER—During the 3 days, I ate no solid food, only the juices, water, herbal tea, and my morning coffee (I had to). I was pretty regimented with my timing (drank bottles at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm all three days). Not gonna lie—I did feel hungry, but not weak or famished in any way. The total calorie count for all 6 bottles per day is 960 calories, so it’s not like you are starving yourself. I went to bed with a growling tummy, and I had a headache on day two and part of day three, but I almost always get a headache when I cleanse, so I expected that.
CLEANSING—Like with any liquid cleanse, I mentally feel like I’ve lost ten pounds because detoxifying just makes you feel so good! But the scale says 3 pounds. I’ll take it. I did take some extra fiber (flax and chia) at night to “speed” things along since I wasn’t eating solid foods.
SUGAR CONTENT—Look, it is high. The sugars that occur naturally in fruits and veggies are still sugar. So, if you’re diabetic, not sure this cleanse is for you. But the thing is, I’ve done veggie-only juice cleanses in the past to avoid the higher sugar content of fruit. For me, veggie-only juice, all day, every day, is just not sustainable. At least with this one, I wasn’t dreading my next bottle like I have been in the past when I juiced with only carrots, beets, celery, spinach, cucumbers, and kale (I’m cringing as I type).
MY ONE “BEEF”—If I was going to knock off a star (which I’m not) it’d be for the lemonade. It’s delicious, don’t get me wrong. But it’s made with Agave (albeit organic). I don’t feel that, with all the natural sugars that are already present in fruit and veggie juice, that this was necessary. In fact, it gave me a slight headache on both days two and three. Plus, I felt a little cheated that I didn’t get 6 juices, only 5, as I felt that the lemonade, with its paltry amount of cayenne pepper, couldn’t really be considered “detoxifying.” It was more like a treat.
BOTTOM LINE—if you can’t make all of this yourself (or don’t have time like me… full time job and two small children), then this detox is a great way to get your diet and cravings back under control, gain some self control, cleanse your palette and your system, and lose a few pounds in the process. I do think I will order it again, but I’d prefer if the total price (including shipping) were right at $100. I understand you have to pay for convenience and shipping perishables, but just as an FYI, if you bought all of these ingredients and made the juice yourself, it’d be around $75 for ALL organic ingredients.
Thanks and happy cleansing!
