Data Driven Review - Not Loudmouth Opinion
Lot's of reviews on here talking about how inaccurate this product is. I don't believe most "negative" reviews - especially when they are full of exclamation marks or requests for Amazon to shut a vendor down (as if Amazon is responsible for policing your buying decisions). I believe that if a product is bad, you send it back. That, more than anything else, solves the problem. If the ad is misleading, then you write a review warning people. But a bad review just because you didn’t like a product? Nope. Keep your opinion to yourself. Nobody cares. Most negative reviews are just sour grapes. And life is too short for me to listen to some sad panda wail about how a vendor has ruined their life. I wanted a set of sizers. These were inexpensive and made of metal. Sounded perfect! Is it cheap? Sure! You get what you pay for. Your local high-end jeweler won’t be using these. But, are they accurate? Yeah. Yeah they are. And I have the data to prove it. Not opinion. But honest to God measurements compared to the international standards. First, let's talk about what is concerning in the product description. As of 1/29/2022, the product description says "The sizes are stamped on the stem of each ring" and this is true. It is stamped. But it also says "Each ring is laser engraved with USA Sizes 1-13 including 1/2 half size increments." Besides confusing me with “1/2 half size” (wouldn’t that be 1/4?), it is also wrong. Size indicators are stamped but they read 0, -0, 1, -1, 2, -2, 3, -3, etc. Not a big deal, but these are not US sizes. They aren't any size I could find online. Decoding it for you, 1 means 1. -1 means 1.5. How do I know? I measured it to figure it out. And that sent me down a rabbit hole. Let me take you with me! I used a NIST calibrated Mitutoyo digital caliper to measure the inner diameter of each ring in two places. I measured each from the stem to opposite of the stem. Then I measured again by turning the ring 90 degrees so that I was measuring perpendicular to the "stem" dimension. I put each value into a spread sheet (which I attached as a photo for your consideration) and then averaged the values for each size. I then rounded the result to the nearest 0.1 mm. Then I compared that rounded value to the Official International Ring Size Conversion Chart. You can google that. Finally, I calculated the difference between the Official measurement for the size in question and my actual measurement, and determined how accurate the actual diameter of the ring sizer was compared to the published standard. Guess what! Nothing was less than 98.9% accurate, and the average accuracy was 99.5%. The ring that almost never leaves my ring finger is a size 10.5 split band ring. It measures 20.19 mm. What does the 10.5 Mudder sizer measure? 20.20 mm. That's difference of 0.01 mm boys and girls. If you are sizing your rings so tight that 0.01 mm will make a difference, then you have unrealistic expectations in ring sizing. A difference of 0.01 mm is thinner that the thickness of one of my gray hairs. (Yes, I measured it. It was 0.08 mm if you must know.) So if your ring is sized so small that you cannot get a human hair between it and your skin, you’re in trouble. Your fingers will swell and shrink throughout the day (and the seasons). Sometimes mine will shrink to the point that if I’m in the shower and soaped up, it can literally drop right off my hand. And yet a few hours after I eat something salty, that same ring will be so snug that I struggle to remove it. So don’t think a difference of 0.01 mm is a “horrible disaster that will ruin your life.” It won’t. Even 0.1 mm won't. If you need some ring sizers, order this set. But also use some common sense. Want to order a $20 ring off the web? Fine, use these sizers. Want to order a $ 3,500 engagement ring and wedding band? Get off your couch and go see a jeweler.
