Solid 4 stars, don't give that out lightly. For the price it is pretty great. This carafe works well for what it is, I got the cork, single walled version and it is solid. Aside from a couple of weird quirks (it doesn't pour as well as a chemex and the included filter is worthless), this is a solid buy. You should be making your coffee w/ a paper filter (#4 fits best) anyway so don't worry about the mesh filter. Here's how to use this product best: 1) Use number 4 filters and ditch the mesh filter. 2) Grind your coffee midway between coarse and fine. French press is too coarse, V60 style grind is probably perfect. (You're shooting for a 4 minute brew, although that also depends on technique, so tune for that). 3) Ignore the 'internal-cap' that is included, it doesn't really add any value to the product. 4) Pour your coffee on the OPPOSITE side of the spout. I can't stress this enough. You'll find that if you try to use the 'nozzle' in the glass, that the coffee doesn't pour well and sometimes leaks down the outside. Instead, if you pour from the 'back' of the carafe it works perfectly. 5) Enjoy your coffee.
