Blobs of Joy
Did you ever have a mouse crawl into your dishwasher and die? (And by “into” I mean back inside the mechanics, not the part where you put the dishes.) The really fun twist is that this happens in the middle of an incredibly hot summer, so the smell is extra pungent. How a creature so small can make a stench so big is extremely impressive. It’s just not really my preferred fragrance. There’s a reason Yankee Candle doesn’t sell a votive called “Decaying Mouse.” Anyway, I tried candles, Febreeze, pretty much everything I could think of. Nothing really helped. I ordered a new dishwasher, but my installation date was two weeks away. I found the Fresh Wave Odor Removing Gel and decided to give it a try. Ah.May.Zing!
The jar has a foil cover that I took off and set aside. (The cap has lots of holes in it, so you need the foil to keep it from drying out when not in use.) The smell is hard to describe, but my first instinct is to say a muted spicy pine. And it wasn’t a matter of the Fresh Wave Odor Removing Gel “out-smelling” the mouse corpse; it seemed to absorb the majority of the smell! Every morning I would shake the jar to refresh the gel blobs and get them re-wetted by the liquid in the bottom. The blobs would shrink a little each day as they dried out. I guess after 3 solid weeks of 24/7 use, maybe 1/3 to 1/4 was left. I kept the foil on and capped tightly, so the next time I wanted to freshen the air, I just shook the jar, removed the foil, and it was ready to go.
If you have a “stink emergency” or “smell issue” or anything along that line, get these. If you want to have something on hand just in case, get these. And if you are lucky enough to experience the vile, putrid stench of a dead rodent stuck inside an appliance, get these.
