PS4 Slim is great for me! Is it for you?
I got exactly what I wanted with the PS4 Slim...
-- An update to my Day-1 PS4. Mainly, a lighter console -- good aesthetically & easy to move around the few times I need to.
-- 5G WiFi support (excellent, I got 90mbps).
-- Super easy to install my 1TB Fusion drive (literally, 5 minutes).
This is not for everyone though. It's great for me because I'm very happy with my 2-yr old 1080p HDTV & Sound Bar & don't plan on updating to 4K until networks broadcast it regularly (or unless my TV stops working). I also don't use an optical output from my console. Therefore, the PS Pro would only cost me more for technology I won't use in the next 3-4 years & I much prefer the slimmer console.
Bottom line -- I gave it 5 stars because it delivers on what it intends to do. I won't rate it lower for what it can't do since it was not intended as such. The same as I would not give a low rating to a Honda Accord because it wasn't as luxurious as a Mercedes Benz. I'm going to rate it for reliability and value (and I must say, improved looks).
In comparison, the new console is -- I'd say -- 20% lighter & looks 33% smaller. Overall build is nice. I also prefer the matte finish. Can't speak about it's reliability as only time will tell. The drive's noise level seems the same as the Day 1 PS4 but also not a factor for me as I play mostly digital games. The price is good -- $299 with one of it's finest games, Uncharted 4 bundled in.
Also, if you're like me & will upgrade the drive -- it's very easy. Just go to [...] & download the 4.0 firmware on a USB drive (ExFAT format). Make sure to download the 900mb version/not 300. The larger version is the one you'll need for a full re-install with a new drive. Follow the instructions (towards the bottom) for "Perform a New Installation of the System Software".
Lastly, in comparison to Xbox One S, which seems nice now that they finally got rid of the power brick -- only took 'em like 10 years:) I prefer the PS4 Slim for a couple of reasons. Playstation's Baseball game (The Show) is amazing & Xbox hasn't really had one since Triple Play (again, important to me but not all). I also don't particularly like the white finish since it does not match the rest of my Electronics setup. However, it seems to be good & has a 4K Blu-Ray player which PS4 Slim does not (but once again, I stream & don't use disks so it doesn't help me). On a negative note, I have read a few reports of the XB1 S overheating (but can't confirm).
In Summary, as you can see -- the PS4 Slim works for me in every way. What it doesn't feature, I don't need and was not expecting it since it was not advertised that way. What it does is exactly what I want it for and does it well. Hope this helped those considering purchasing it.
