At first I was reluctant to try this lock after reading online that trailers were being stolen by using the safety chains and this lock did nothing to prevent that. After looking at the design I thought I might be able to use the cross piece to capture the chains, so I went ahead and ordered it. I'm pleased to say that this worked for me and now both my coupler and chains are secured. I can't say this will work in all cases, but it worked for me. I should add that the cross piece is too large in diameter to fit through a link, but as the photo shows you can capture the chain between the coupler and the cross piece so it can't be removed without defeating the lock. Also, my coupler is welded to the frame, not bolted, so I did not have to worry about a thief unbolting the whole coupler and using his own. I feel more secure now when I leave my trailer unattended.
