Lightweight portable blu-ray/dvd drive
I just wanted to figure out an easy way to play blu-ray discs on my PC, so initially considered purchasing a generic blu-ray player from Amazon for about $50. I then realized that for another ~$50 I could have a way of copying all my family pictures and videos on to blu-ray discs. I use carbonite and an external hard drive for daily backups, but I can put the blu-ray discs in a fire-proof box and forget about them. The 506BA model got a good review from a major PC magazine, so I figured newer 506BB version might be just as good. The drive is very compact and lightweight. The case is plastic. It seems a bit fragile -- if you step on it by mistake I have no doubt the case will crack and the drive will be destroyed. But not many people tend to walk on blu-ray drives, so that's probably not a problem. The drive is very quiet -- can't even hear it with blu-ray video playing. The size and weight is such that I can easily put this into a laptop bag and take it on the road with me. Trial software packages to play blu-rays and do other media related things were included with the drive but I did not use them. Instead I installed the free versions of DVDFab Passkey 8 and VSO Media Player, as suggested by some other reviewer named Bman, and I'm watching the blu-ray discs from Netflix without a problem. I'm happy with this purchase, though at ~$97 it's pricier than what I initially thought I wanted.
