With flowers off....the best of the best
IMO the flower feeder is the best of the First Nature hummer feeders. At first I had bad feelings about taking the flowers off, but I immediately mellowed on the issue because it doesn't look bad and it improves the feeder and makes it a better feeder by doing this IMO. I have pictures in the pic section without the flowers. Keeping flowers off keeps cleaning more simple, doesn't add yellow to the feeder which can attract bees, and adds 1mm to the size of the holes, which the hummers probably prefer. Why is it the best First Nature feeder? The flower feeder with flowers off has outlets that protrude up rather than curve down as with the First Nature oval hole base, and also has a slight smaller opening, but is more than adequate for the hummers. This allows less chance of rainwater to enter the feeder. I left a dry feeder out overnight when it was raining and even though the ant moat collected 1 cm of water in it, the inside of the feeder had less than 1cc of water in it. Also a smaller port that is protruding up rather than the the slightly bigger oval holes that curve down that form sort of a cup, should do a better job of discouraging bees and other critters from using the feeder, because it keeps the nectar a slight farther away from the opening, saving your nectar for your hummers. I clean my feeder with just hot running water every few days before sugar water refills and do a more thorough clean every couple of months. It doesn't hold up to a dishwater, but hot water is fine as long as not too hot and for too long.
