Wow. In my search for a minimalistic and modern looking baby mat (I.e. light or neutral colored with an inoffensive pattern), I tried out the black and white YAY! Mat with the plus sign, and a Baby Care mat (much cheaper with a coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond, around $80; Amazon sells them for $149). Well, the Ofie is the most expensive but the most worth it too. It actually feels like memory foam and you sink into it as you walk. It's comfortable enough to lie on with your baby and I have zero concerns about my baby falling or landing on this mat since it gives the right amount of squishy cushioning (and frankly, the softness I was expecting from all the mats I ordered, I thought my decision would just be based on the different patterns across companies)! The YAY interlocking mat is thick foam with no give. It's about double the thickness of the Ofie or Baby Care. It'd be better to fall on than concrete or tile, but doesn't really do too much. I think people describe it as exercise / gym floor foam (thick and stiff with no give), so I was pretty disappointed that I put two on my registry and missed the return window... I was that sold on them and naive in my assumption that all baby mats would be soft. The Baby Care mat I bought after the Ofie - and again, I thought I'd get the exact same cushioning, just for a cheaper price and slightly less desirable pattern. I was wrong. The Baby Care feels more gelatinous/jelly-like, kind of like it's filled with more stuff, but with less give. It's kind of how a yoga mat would feel on a hard floor (though thicker than most yoga mats) - you can still squish it between your fingers, but if you sit down on it, you'll experience more a thud of resistance, whereas the Ofie really gives a soft cloud foam landing. Personally, my baby and I spend the most time on the Ofie and rarely venture onto the other two surfaces - they're just not as comfortable. P.S. My sister-in-law and our daycare use the Parklon mats. Those are also nice (though I think they have the same feel as the Baby Care mat but may be slightly softer) but they're also super expensive. The Ofie one is by far the best one.
