I could tell the difference by the second use. I do suggest having a second toothbrush just for the charcoal. It is messy but worth the clean -up. It does not stain your teeth at all but it does look scary while you are brushing. Once you rinse and brush with your regular toothpaste, all is sparkly clean :)
