A beginners perspective + sizing photos
Let me preface this review by stating that I've only been riding for about 8 months now. I have no experience with clipless. I was previously just using the stock plastic pedals, so in reality any pedals would have delivered a significant improvement in my riding. That being said, here's my rundown. Specs included for reference. Pedal: Stamp 7, Large Since purchase: 87.2 miles over 13 rides. Bike: Roscoe 8 (Hardtail) Shoe in Photo: US Men's Nike Metcon 2, Size 10. 1. Grip - The adjustable pins took 2-3 rides to get used to. At first, I felt like they were too grippy. I couldn't adjust my foot position through corners, etc. as easily, but after adapting to the grip, it's far superior. The pedals do not lose traction through water/mud/climbing. 2. Durability - I've had a few pedal strikes, the most recent creating sparks. There are no bends/dents in the structure. Some of the paint has scratched/nicked, but that's understandable in my opinion. 3. Flush Mount - This factors into the size consideration when purchasing. The pedals are flush mounted to the crank arm, so there is no .75-1 inch pedal spindle arm gap between the inner edge of the pedal and the crank arm. Perhaps this wouldn't matter to a more experienced rider but I noticed that I initially was scrubbing the crank arm with my shoes. Why is this important? I think buying the LARGE gave my the extra room needed to adjust to the gap and find stable footing without scrubbing. 4. SIZE - This was the biggest hangup for me when purchasing. I'm a 10-10.5 depending on the shoe, so I'm right on the line for the small vs large. I opted for the large and could not be happier. If you're on the line between the small and large, I would highly recommend the LARGE. Since purchasing these, I have seen major improvements in overall riding performance and confidence trying new stuff, like jumps etc. Hope that helps, Cheers.
