I feel like if I can help one person
Used for scabies.....
I thought I'd share my success with those out there who may be reading this with a scabies issue. First, after going to the doctor, we paid $30 (after insurance) for a tube of generic permetherin. We had been struggling with a "rash" that had spread through our little family for several months and we could keep it at bay, but not heal it. This tube was enough to treat us (two adults and one small child) once. Several days after treatment...you're supposed to wait 7 days-ish... it was clear we needed more. I contacted the doctor who wanted us all to come back in. This would have been another $100 bucks or so, so I started researching online and through a site was led here.
I purchased this stuff .... it came FAST and saved me a lot of time and money. I had an almost empty tub of lotion and used baby lotion (a pleasant smell) to mix. You can see how to mix this with lotion on youtube. We used the mixture as we would the cream you buy from the pharmacy...from neck down....all over, overnight, shower in morning. I spot treated my scalp as well as my sons because we had bumps in our hair. Doctor said we wouldnt have them there, but yes, we in fact did. I bought a spray bottle at the dollar store and mixed a bit of this with water and sprayed our couch, carpets, mattresses, and anywhere I thought there might be little buggars. I did that at night. Then vacuumed couch, carpets, beds, etc in the morning. Sheets were washed daily and clothing went straight to laundry. All laundry was washed in HOT water and dried. I'd get "bites" on my hand when I did laundry and would spot treat those.
I also sprayed some of our clothing (bras, socks, shoes we wore a lot, etc) and bagged them for a couple days then washed in hot water. I bagged two pillows because we found them in our hair. I did not treat those pillows.
We treated ourselves twice with this and I sprayed twice. We were scabie free, I'd say within the month. I still have well over half a bottle of this stuff so I've got it sealed and saved, JIC. Here are a few other tips I've learned that hopefully will help anyone out there with this lovely problem. I feel like if I can help one person...the time I take to write this is worth it.
1. You will read horror stories online.
2. Educate yourself....I learned a ton reading online, even the bad, scary stuff.
3. They HATE heat. If I had a really bad itch...hands seem to be the worse...I'd go turn my blow dryer on and use the heat until I couldnt
stand it. A few blasts of the dryer and the itch will be gone. Also a really hot bleach bath was amazing for me. My husband thought I was
nuts. Not a lot...less than a cup. If that freaks you out, dont do it....but if you're curious.... the bleach bath (I did once) really helped with the
itching. Didn't get rid of them though.
4. Be careful with laundry....laundry was tricky. I bought rubber gloves finally for when I did laundry. You also have to grab loads carefully
so nothing gets on your clothes that you are wearing.
5. Permetherin can make you itch also. As soon as I slathered that stuff all over me, my skin rejected it and I itched! Places where I knew I did
not have scabies itched. My husband actually felt better after putting the cream on. I had to take Benedryl to sleep on nights I treated
myself. It was better ...mostly...after I washed it off.
6. They do tend to move slow.... our outbreak took several months to progress and we still are not sure where it started. When our small child
got the rash it did move faster, much faster on his soft skin. We realized it was doctor time then.
7. Post scabies....the after itch....is a real thing. My neck and chest still itch in places I did not have them. My husband whelps due to sensitive
skin. He still randomly does this in places. (we've been free about a month now) I've read post scabies can last several months. You can
also get pimply looking bumps in post. They look different from scabies. If you're not sure, you're scabies bumps will be close together
and you might be able to see a trail (burrow) between the bumps where the scabie went in and then set up house. The post bumps are
bigger, I noticed and look a bit like zits. They can itch too.
8. Really bad spots might leak after treatment. Gross I know. Have the Neosporin or other antibacterial cream ready just in case. Also,
Vaseline is your friend...it's greasy...but great to moisturize skin and they cant move in it. Benedryl helps for itchy nights so you can sleep.
9. Back to the post scabies thing. Be careful not to over treat yourself and your family. I did a few "spot" treatments just to keep from having to
full body especially on my son. Permetherin is a pesticide, so we have to remember that.
10. They say to treat your pets as they might be carriers. Pets will not get it. I personally, would not put a strong pesticide on my small dog or
our elderly cat.
11. Try not to feel ashamed. It's a horrible unspoken problem. We are not poverty stricken or anything like that. We are a regular middle class
family.. somehow my husband..or I...were exposed and that was all it took.
12. Make sure you WASH off the cream the NEXT day. Remember I said I spot treated? I had them real bad on my chest and spot treated
myself real good one night. I overslept the next morning and rushed to work. About late-afternoon I got incredibly dizzy and nauseous.
I was trying to think of what was wrong and remembered the cream. I was seeing spots and rushed to the bathroom to wash it off. I do
not know if permetherin caused the problem, but I felt better after a while and it never happened again. And my chest itched for days after.
13. Lastly...something I read several times that helped me NOT freak out....most people only have a few on them at one time and they can
not live very long without a host. So all the horror stories about them crawling all over everything in your home because you have them
is more than likely false. We had it approx 5 months before it was diagnosed, treated and gone. I'd say it took us about a month (after this
purchase) before we felt like "they" were truly gone. I did not treat our entire home and did not feel the need to. Things were wiped down
and we were mostly more cautious of laundry....that's where I can say the ones waiting for a host are because they seem to get
trapped in clothes.
Hopefully that helps someone out there. I read a lot of home remedy type approaches...which honestly is what I would have preferred...but after my research I didn't find anyone who could say that their remedy was 100%. And most of them were concoctions that sounded just a rough as the permetherin. So I chose this route. Good luck!
