And so ends my lengthy (and pricey) quest for a natural deodorant...
I loved Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant.. I mean, LOVED. It was as good as all those chemical- and aluminum-filled deodorants and seemed to be perfect, except for the triclosan. So after a few months, I grudgingly gave it up and began my quest to find the perfect all-natural deodorant. It took weeks and lots of money. There were days I was afraid I smelled so bad, that I would feign having to pee every half hour so I could re-apply whatever deodorant I was trying out at the moment. I was on the verge of giving up when some nice lady in Whole Foods (who carries this stuff for cheaper, BTW ;) ) pointed Herban Cowboy out to me! Within a day I was in love and I haven't looked back! For comparison, let me break down what deodorants I've used and why I've been less than thrilled with them..
1. Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant - Awesome, as long as you're okay with applying pesticide to your underarms (you shouldn't be).
2. Crystal Essence Deodorant Roll On Mineral - Seemed to work pretty well (the lavender had a nice smell), but the fact that it's made from Potassium Alum (aka Potassium Aluminum Sulfate) is a huge turn-off.
3. Weleda Deodorant (Wild Rose) - I don't know why people love this stuff. One, the SMELL. My god. If you enjoy smelling like DEET/a citronella candle, awesome! But I could barely breathe the air around me and my boyfriend refused to come near me whenever I re-applied, which was often. That brings me to number two, duration. This stuff didn't last all that long for me (3-4 hours), but certainly longer than Tom's (see #4), and re-application meant risking a headache due to the smell. Not to mention, the stuff is alcohol-based so if you've shaved/waxed/etc. recently, brace yourself. And number three, price. For the amount you get and number of times I needed to reapply, it's not worth it.
4. Tom's of Maine Natural Long-Lasting Deodorant Stick (Apricot) - Long lasting, my butt. A forty-five minute ride in the car and the stuff had worn off. I re-applied, went on a 6-mile hike, and came back smelling to the high-heavens. It certainly had a pleasant smell, but the stuff was definitely not for me.
5. Herban Cowboy (Men and Women's) - I started out with the men's because after my Tom's and Weleda debacles, I figured I must sweat more than the average woman. The stuff worked really well, but the smell was slightly too masculine, so I switched to the Blossom fragrance. It's light and fresh and will not interfere with any perfumes you might use. I have to re-apply maybe once a day (if I remember), but am no longer paranoid everyone can smell me! The stuff actually works! Now, the fragrance tends to fade and often you're left smelling like nothing (which can be scary), but there's also no BO! Now, Boston has had a few strings of 90+-degree days this summer, and that fact that I was able to make it through them smell-free makes me very happy with this product!
