Newer version is out
The bulb is great but be aware that there is an updated version of this bulb. The new bulb has the exact same UPC but is significantly different. The new version puts out 840 lumens vs. 800 for the old version, and it also uses 9 watts of power vs. 9.5 for the last version. If you want max brightness then the new version is what you want. I got a couple at WallyWorld and that's how I noticed the difference. I ordered these from Amazon hoping I would get the new ones, but didn't.
UPDATE: I just received four bulbs today (12/28), after Amazon was out of stock for most of the holidays. All four were of the latest version, so it appears that the older version is sold out. Even though the description is not updated to reflect the changes in the latest version, one can reasonably expect to get the newest updated bulb when ordering now. I called Philips a while ago about this and they were reluctant to discuss the newer version. I guess they wanted to help their retailers sell through the old version before they publicized the improved version. At any rate, I'm more than satisfied with the bulbs. I have eighteen now and they have always worked flawlessly. I have several outdoors which have coped with below zero temps just fine. Note that the more bulbs you have, the greater the range of their network as each bulb acts as a range extender. I have some outdoors quite a distance from the hub they never lose connection. They work great with the Echo. Without it, a lot of the convenience is lost. At night, I can ask Alexa to turn them all off, and within a few seconds they all go out, group by group.
Amazon's price on these bulbs has varied since the end of December anywhere from $50 to $80 for two, except when you order the Easy-to-open Packaging, which was consistently $29.99 until recently when they sold out of that option. And they still have not updated the description as of 2/10/17 to reflect the new specs. It would appear they are price gouging on the high demand for the bulbs. There may be another reason, but it doesn't make sense that the price of these bulbs should vary daily like airfares. You can get them other places for the standard price of $29.99 for two.
