Comfortable, attractive and well built, but obnoxiously creaky on hardwood floors
One of my coworkers let me try her Move by Varier Tilting Saddle Stool, Natural Ashwood Frame, Black Fabric STE 999 Seat which I wasn't a fan of. Having something between my legs all day gave me too much of a wedgie.
Another coworker let me try her Wobble Stool By Uncaged Ergonomics - The Perfect Ergonomic Office Stool for Active Sitting, Sit/stand Standing Desks, Bar Stool Breakfast Adjustable Saddle Task Chair (Black) which was much better, but I felt that the seating surface was too small even for my skinny butt. It would eventually get uncomfortable. The other problem with the wobble stool is that the fabric was very smooth and it would slowly slide upwards towards my back if I was leaning on it. Both of these problems are fine (as it cues me to stand for awhile instead), but if I'm buying something, I wanted to look for something that's grippier and has a wider base.
I thought this Safco Twixt stool looked very sharp and finally settled on a color. Assembly was dead simple with no tools required and the packaging was fine.
The first thing I noticed was that it's VERY noisy on my hardwood floor. Every time I shift positions, it creaks obnoxiously. I concede that I did wash it just 2 days ago, so there's no dust or dirt to slide on. It's resolved by putting a rug underneath it, but then the rug would slide if I tilted the stool and leaned against it. If you're planning to use this in a non-carpeted environment, you'll probably want to skip this one. I'm bringing it into my carpeted office, so I don't anticipate any issues.
It's very comfortable, and I'm happy with the wider seating area. It seems to be well built. It's made in Taiwan, which in my experience is generally an order of magnitude better than most Chinese imports.
Overall, I'm pleased with it so far. The fabric is grippier than the other active stools I've tried, and the wider base is just more comfortable. While the base is just hollow plastic, it seems durable and will permit more surface area on the floor to provide grip. I don't see this being an issue. I'll continue to update this review as I get used to it and use it more, but I'm looking forward to getting a lot of years out of it!
UPDATE AUGUST 2018:
It's been about 2 years since I got it, and I've used it for about 20 hours/week since. The fabric is still mint, it hasn't faded or stretched at all that I can tell. I was concerned that crumbs or lint or whatever else would get embedded into the "pores" like other seats with that fabric, but somehow mine is still perfectly clean.
I did notice that the seat was a little "stiff" (didn't spring as much) and could no longer be lowered while I was leaning. I had to be sitting perfectly vertical to adjust it. I used some automotive grease to lubricate the piston, and it's night and day different–it's as good as the day I got it again.
