Seekers Apply Within
I read this book cover to cover and understand why some readers may find it uninteresting or unhelpful. Tribe of Mentors does not contain any central ideas or methods for improving your life. Reading it cover to cover is, admittedly, somewhat boring. Consisting of about one hundred interviews of very successful people from all walks of life, Tribe of Mentors is not meant to be read cover to cover. Several questions are repeated from subject to subject so it has short chapters which can be read in five minutes. A particular chapter may speak to your current situation. If it doesn’t just ignore it and move on. You’ve only wasted five minutes. There are over one hundred other people to choose from. If one of the subjects does offer some advice that applies to you then put it into practice. As far as you’re concerned the book is a success. You’ve found at least one way your life can be improved. Hopefully, you find more. Ideally, you return to this book at different times in your life to seek wisdom. Different chapters are addressed to different audiences. But if you are looking for a big idea or deep narrative as in many self-help books you will be disappointed. The only way this book will be successful is if you connect enough with one of the subjects to act on their advice. One caveat: the book is addressed to what some people refer to as privileged individuals. In other words, the ideal reader is a young American with a college education and many opportunities open to them. I wish Ferriss would have broadened the advice to more people on the margins. Even so, this is a wonderful resource I plan on returning to. Highly recommended if you are a seeker, explorer, adventurer or just interested in leading a more fulfilling life.
