“We’ve looked into these things and they’re nonsense.”
I Alone Can Fix it provides inside information on some things you probably already knew (Steven Miller is despised as a jerk by other members of Trump’s inner, uh, circle. And of course Everybody Hates Rudy) but also offers inside info on perhaps-less-well-known mechanics of the Trump White House, some of which are touched on here.
The book reminds us that Bill Barr, while clearly and eternally disgracing his Attorney General’s office by allowing Trump cover for claiming he was “exonerated’ by Mueller, steered the cowboys away from unleashing the military on the Lafayette Square protesters. Barr also clearly told Trump, after one of his early stolen election tirades, “We’ve looked into these things and they’re nonsense.” One might fault him for not broadcasting that from the rooftops, but at least he stood up to Trump to his face.
The book’s revelations about Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Miley's fear that Trump would call on the government to stage a coup after his election defeat have already been widely reported, but still. Wow. Although Miley got himself wrapped up in the Lafayette Square Bible Photo Op, he appeared to have a hot stove moment about providing any more political cover for Trump. History will likely smile upon him.
The book is not only constructed from numerous off-the-record interviews, not all of which are meant to provide joke fodder about Rudy and Miller, but an on-the-record interview with Trump. The authors report it lasted over 2 hours, over twice as long as scheduled. Look for no shortage of imaginary anecdotes from that interview coming from Trump in the very near future.
