So Far I'm Impressed
I pre-ordered this as soon as I heard it was coming out. We have two Nest 2nd Gen Thermostats and three 1st Gen wired Nest Protects and I love them. I personally had a bad experience with the 1st Nest Cam, but really wanted to give this a 2nd chance.
I was hoping that the power cord would be connected through a micro USB port that I could switch out the cord for a Ring Stickup Cam solar panel that I have, but alas, no luck. This thing is really meant to be plugged in at all times. I'm guessing that is because of the constant recording which caused my first Nest Cam to feel so hot I was afraid it was malfunctioning. Hopefully we won't have this issue with the Outdoor Cam. Here are my thoughts so far. I'll update if anything interesting to share comes up.
The Good:
- The camera is rather large compared to the Nest Cam and seems watertight enough to not have issues being plugged up outside in an uncovered driveway.
- The night vision is really nice, and far superior to what I have with my Ring Stickup Cam. Like there isn't even a comparison.
- The notifications are almost instantaneous. Of course I'm at home with everything all on the same wi-fi, but still impressive.
- There are no delays in live streaming. This is especially impressive considering my Canary (which I love by the way) has a 10 second delay.
- Setup was incredibly easy. I scanned the QR code added the wi-fi and password and we were ready to go. It took less than 5 min to get going!
- My husband and I tested two-way audio and it works really well. The sound is clear at close range and if you shout you can hear it from the ground. Right now it's about 10 feet off of the ground.
- Also, the landscapers were here working outside today and set the motion sensors off but the trees swaying in the wind have not caused the sensors to activate.
The Not so Good:
- I'm still annoyed at the cost of the monthly/yearly subscription fees.
- I'm not electrician by any stretch of the imagination, so someone please let me know if I'm overthinking it, but the plug is not grounded and that bothers me for being outside.
The Other:
- The packaging is nice and standard Nest. I'm a sucker for good packaging.
- There is hardware included to mount this indoors or outdoors. It comes with 12 screws for some reason which is way more than you need to install.
I've included a bunch of pictures, but so far I'm really happy with the picture quality and performance. Time will tell though how things go!
