It's cool, it's light, it does the job, it's well priced
I just received this laptop (model: sw5-012) and have used it for an hour. Here is my preliminary review. First of all, I have not experienced the stuck Windows key like I did with the older model (sw5-011). If you have read my other review on the older model, you would have known that the older model has problem turning on. I was not the only user who experienced these two major issues. I will have to use this new laptop for the next few days in order to see if it also has any issue with powering on as well as any other issues. I will post an update. For now, let me highlight the major differences in features between the two models
New Model vs Old Model
Model # SW5-012 vs SW5-011
MS Office 365 vs Office 2013
Screen resolution 1280x800 vs 1366x768
Power & USB connectors on left side vs on right side
Power button and volume keys on right side vs left side
Windows key on right side vs on the bottom front screen
Amazon price $350 vs $406 (as of today)
The new one also comes preinstalled with a 30-day trial of McAfee. When I first turned on, the laptop was sluggish. I was immediately disappointed. But I did not give up. I wanted to find out why. I believed that McAfee might be the cause. After uninstalling it, the laptop feels smooth and is more responsive. I hope my review helps thus far. I plan to post an update in a week or so. Stay tuned.
-- Update Oct 20 night --
I shut down the tablet many times in my test and each time it had no problem turning back on. One issue I have experienced so far is that the Windows Update app seems to stall. Instead of using the app, I signed in to Desktop and performed Windows update from there (charm > search > windows update). Another issue is that when the tablet is shut down, a single press of the power button will turn it on. I would not expect it to turn on unless the power button is pressed and held for a few seconds. Is this a feature or a bug?
The display is nice and bright, Windows is responsive to mouse and keyboard commands or switching between apps. Applications load fast enough to please me. Keyboard is comfortable enough, but my hands are small. Keys are somewhat too hard, which make me miss a key or two when I type very fast. 2GB RAM is too little for Windows, but does not pose a problem for Office apps and browsing. I would be happy to pay a bit more for another 2GB. RAM is soldered on. So no upgrade you can do yourself.
What I really love about this tablet/laptop combo is the fact that it's so handy and efficient for casual use and light work - so much more so than my full blown laptop. I can just fold it up and take it with me - no need to place it in a travel case, no worry for short battery life, instant on and off with SSD drive, can zoom in and out of a webpage with built-in touchpad. If I don't have a separate mouse with me, no problem because I can use my figures - it's a touch screen. In the past when I went to Starbucks to work on projects & research, I had to look out for a seat near an electrical outlet because the battery of my regular laptop only lasted 2 hours (4 when brand new). This little Acer lasts 6 to 7 hours. Now when I go to Starbucks with this little dude, I am free to sit anywhere I want. As a matter of fact, I did not even bring the charger with me last time. The experience is just wonderful. I'd be great if Acer makes a 12" combo with 4GB and higher resolution in future models.
-- Update Nov 23 --
By now I have used this Acer 2-1 tablet for over a month. It's still working well. I did a performance test against the built-in SSD drive. The write speed is about the same as a mechanical 72000rpm hard drive. The read speed is only slightly faster. In other words, Acer provides a low-end SSD. But it may not be fair to compare it to a desktop hard drive running at 72000rpm. Mechanical hard drive for laptops typically runs at 54000rpm. This SSD should be a lot faster than a 54000rpm drive. But there are other advantages an SSD drive offers. They include faster access time, no spinning and perhaps lower power consumption. I only made 1 or 2 Windows update. I would not dare to keep updating it because I feel the additional software will slow down the machine. Like I said before, it only has 2GB of RAM and a slow processor, which is just good enough for light load, but is far from good for any heavy duty or additional running software/processes. I bought a wireless Bluetooth mouse to pair with this Acer. It works great together. Be sure you get a Bluetooth and not a USB wireless mouse because there is only 1 full-size USB port. You want to save the port for something else.
