Unbeatable at this price.
A little background, I have been a Prime member for several years, and my renewal fee was coming due in January. At the same time, both my wife and I were using Iphone 4's, which were going on 4-5 years old. We were in need of an upgrade. My wife wanted to get the Iphone 6. I started looking into the cost... either $650 upfront, or roll $650 into your monthly payments over 2 years, or sign up for a 2 year contract, pay $199 + $40 upgrade fee AND your monthly bill goes up $30 per month. No matter which way you slice it, AT&T was going to get their $650 per phone, and to be honest, forking out $1,300 for 2 cell phones just sounds nuts.
Flash-forward to the Black Friday sale and this phone was on sale for $199 + 1 free year of Amazon Prime. On top of that, you can stack the prime membership, so in purchasing two phones, my out of pocket cost was $400 and had two years of Amazon Prime added to my account that I would have had to pay for anyways.. .Net Cost to me, $200, or $100 per phone. That is unbeatable! I couldn't even find crappy old flip phones in this price range, let alone a pretty high-end smartphone.
And that is why I am rating this at 4 stars. Is it as slick as my Iphone? Nope. But I now realize that the Iphone is not worth 6.5 times the price of this phone. It does everything I ask of it, email, text, apps, pictures, etc. The camera is hands down fantastic compared to my old Iphone. Yes, there are not as many apps as the Itunes store, but there have only been a few that I would like to have that aren't available. I haven't tried messing with side loading or any of that, because quite honestly, I have found what I need. The OI is a little annoying at times and doesn't feel quite as polished as my Iphone, but I really have not had any major issues with learning to use it.
I ended up going to Cricket Wireless for my plan and got a great price on 4G LTE speed data. Don't be concerned when you key in your IMEI number on their site and it shows you that you can only get 3G speed. That is incorrect, and I can assure you when I plugged in my SIM card, I received 4G LTE speeds. Sound quality is phenomenal compared to my old phone.
Think about this for a moment. Factoring in the Prime membership addition, I ended up getting 2 Fire Phones, 2 Kindle Fire 6's for the kids, and a Kindle HDX 7 tablet for myself for the price of 1 Iphone 6. Is it really worth that price?
