I needed a fast way to make a single cup of coffee, without using a Keurig. I use about a tablespoon of ground coffee in this, set it in my mug, pour boiling water over and let steep about 2-3 minutes. I'm sure some coffee purists probably balk at this thought, but I found using the same ground dark/espresso roast that it made a less acidic tasting brew than my coffee maker did. The silicon ring on the outside edge did indeed stay cool to the touch even so close to the boiling water. It was also easy to remove when I first got it so that I could wash it fully. The mesh on this filter is some of the finest I've ever seen. Even using espresso finely ground coffee I didn't get sediment in my cup. This infuser feels sturdy, but the nature of fine mesh means less material for structure. If I were going to store this in a drawer that got a lot of shoving activity I might store it inside a cup to prevent it from getting dented. I agree with the hand wash only even though this feels sturdy enough to go through the dishwasher. I'd hate for the stuff off my dishes to get lodged in the mesh. Ew. Handwashing it is. I'll probably buy another one to use for tea, as making sure that coffee oils or tea tannins didn't go back and forth between beverages might be a bit difficult. My coffee grounds can go straight from the infuser into the composter, not making garbage like my Keurig does. Using a steel heated kettle and this infuser I feel like the flavor of my coffee is better, and likely a touch healthier. I'm super satisfied with this infuser.
