Work great as pens, but a few complaints
I own these and the Stabilo 88s and so I have a point of comparison.
These are extremely fine, 0.3. However, they are still not fine enough for some of the details of certain coloring books I've seen, such as Mystical Menagerie Coloring Book and the similar style I've seen in even smaller coloring books. This is in no way fault of the pens, but of the coloring books. I do not understand how they can make details thinner than a hair that you could only color with a 0.1 pen and a microscope, and this is coming from someone with 20/20 vision and in her 20s with no issues of arthritis.
These can, however, do the job better than any other pen, including the 88s. Unlike other reviewers, I have yet to have any issue with them drying out, and I haven't been soft on them at all.
The other thing is that they have much more colors available, 42 compared to 30
I do have some complaints, however.
Unlike the Stabilo 88s, it is rather difficult to find these sold individually, which is a pretty major downside for me. I have one site I go to for refill art supplies and I find myself having to find another website just for these. As professional art materials, I should be able to find these sold individually because there are always going to be colors you use more than others.
My larger complaint on that note, is that the pens are not labeled with their color or number, and I had to spend more time than I should have looking at photos and comparing them to pens to figure out which color was which, and then add the necessary labels to each pen. I had a hard time tracking down a website that sold these individually, it's pretty hard to figure out which exact pen it is that you need. I used Color Charts: Color Collection Edition: 50 Color Charts to record your color collection all in one place for this. This is especially frustrating because:
A lot of the colors are too similar. I thought Lime Green was supposed to be Pale Green because the cap was a very light green, however it's not. There are subtle differences between, say Van Dyke Brown and Brown Sepia, but there's only one color that could really qualify as "turquoise." Aqua Blue and Neon Blue are indistinguishable from a glance, and so are Cyan and Blue, Cyan doesn't even really look like Cyan.
Another small complaint I have is that the pen cap does not really click to the top of the pen and stay there. So I'll be writing, and make one jerky movement, and the cap will go flying. This is somewhat annoying because then I have to take time to find the pen, and I don't understand why such a simple mechanic as making sure the cap stays on the top of the pen hasn't been integrated.
All in all, as a very fine tip point you can use in coloring books, so far so good, but there are some issues I wish the company would sort out that I don't understand why they haven't.
