Great heater with one major flaw
First of all my dog house. I built a 32" x 47" x 30" house, it has 1 1/2 inch foam insulation in the side, roof, and floor. I have a clear thick plastic dog door. I have the heater plugged into a Belkin Wemo so it's controlled with my iPhone and I have a barbecue temperature transmitter in the dog house with the receiver in front of my webcam inside my house for remote monitoring when I'm gone. Overkill I know. The one horrible and potentially dangerous flaw is the joke of a heat shield they have inside. The bottom angled plate indeed does not get hot. The face of the heater, which should also not get hot, is cold at bottom for about a quarter way up. The top three fourths, after being on about 30 minutes, got too hot for me to even brush my finger against for a second. And because the built in temperature just tells the unit when to come on or off, meaning no different heat levels, if it really got cold outside and the heater stayed running, it would be unsafe for dogs to brush up against it. So I built a wood barrier to cover the top three fourths of the heater, while leaving the top and bottom open. It doesn't restrict the heat at all and makes sure the dogs don't get burned. After this modification to my dog house, it solved my problem perfectly but I would think if the house wasn't insulated or have a door, this might have little effect. Glad I went with this option as opposed to the other option I was considering, a heat lamp in a paint can, plugged into a temperature outlet to turn the heat lamp on and off when needed. I would give 3.5 if I could but went with based on it eventually meeting my needs. If I didn't have a way to build this wooden shield, I would rate it 0 stars because it's unusable.
