A good value, not necessarily for everyone.
If you are considering whether to buy this, you probably want to know whether it is a decent printer (it is) and whether it is a good value (it probably is, depending on how much you print). Whether it is the right fit for you is another question.
First, the tank system has definite advantages - even if you only print a moderate amount, it is very economical (when you eventually need them, ink refills cost about the same as cartridges but print way more) and you won't have to deal with filling it very often. However, it does add some work (and risk of mess) and you may still find it actually more convenient (and neater) to deal with cartridges. It's a lot like bottled water in that way. Some people can't stand the waste/cost of those bottles but others prefer the convenience and other advantages.
As far as a printer, this is a decent one. The overall quality seems good. Printing is pretty fast and looks great. It has some advanced features like automatic duplexer and wifi, wired ethernet, AND usb connectivity (but does not come with cables), unlike many wifi printers that ONLY work with wifi. it handles a gazillion printing protocols, has a ton of options in the windows print driver, and has multiple methods to print remotely or from your tablet or smartphone (Android and iOS alike) which are really easy to set up. Unlike some recent printers, there are no frills here that encourage you to use ink up by printing stuff. I should also mention that the ink seems quite waterproof. My last two HP printers were terrible if the prints got wet.
It is, however, in some ways comparable to a much lower-cost printer. For example, it's missing photo-specific features, like borderless printing, a dedicated photo paper tray, USB or memory card slots for printing directly from or scanning directly to media, and a graphical display. Yes, it prints photos on photo paper quite well, but not the best I've encountered. Scanning is quite slow at higher resolutions and maxes out at 1200 dpi, and there's no document feeder. The paper tray is rather small and inconvenient. The output tray design is not the best (when printing is quick, the paper tends to shoot out and disturb the already-printed stack of pages).
None of those downsides is necessarily a fatal flaw. If you account for about how much money you have spent on ink in the past couple years and how much you will now not have to buy for this printer, you'll have a better price comparison with other printers, and for me it works out quite favorabily for the ET-3600 - a very good value. However, some people still will want some of those missing features (most importantly probably are the photo-related ones), so this printer might not be for everyone regardless of the price.
I'm giving it 5 stars because of the overall value even despite the missing features.
