Tom's Hardware rated the Vizio M-Series as the best under $1000.
I ended up buying this TV over the LG 8-Series Nano or Samsung 4K UHD 8-Series based on the Tom's Hardware review. I'm not disappointed. You just need to make sure the model you buy ends in an 8 and not a 7 (I bought the M558-G1). The picture is great, as advertised, and setup was fast. I only have two, very minor, complaints. First, HDMI 1 & 2 are inset and there's not enough room to fit a Roku Streaming+ Stick in either of these slots without an HDMI elbow adapter. That's pretty nitpicky since HDMI 3 & 4 don't have the same issue. My other issue is more obvious in that the stand consists of two tripods. Of course, pretty much every other 8-Series 55" TV is built the same way. I prefer a pedestal given my space, so I bought the freestanding Echogear pedestal for $40 which uses the VESA mounting spots (the same ones used to wall mount). Problem solved.
