Holy grail of dish drainers?
Alas, did I finally discover the holy grail of dish drainers? Time will tell. Who designs dish drainers? Surely people who have never washed a dish in their life. After an exhaustive, marathon search, this one met the basic criteria. Size: Unless you never cook and only rinse your coffee cup and plate, you probably need a large dish drainer! Pans are big! I live alone, but I have lots of dishes. This is one of only two which had substantial enough acreage for a person who likes real food. The other one is reported to rust and does not come with a drainboard, so you have to search for one to cobble together a system. Again, dish drainer engineers never do dishes! Edges: If you are going to have a dish drainer with hooks on the side for cups, wet cups drip water. Wet a cup and hold it up to drain, tilted to the angle it hangs upon the dish drainer. The water drips from the lowest side. Every single dish drainer known to mankind fails in this respect, including this one. The only solution is a silicone or cloth mat, or a very pricey Amish made steel one I found on Amazon. Come on, people. It's a dish drainer. This is an easy project! You had one job! No rust: Time will tell if the coated wire performs as advertised! Drains into the sink: This is the logical place for spare water to run off to. Yet dish drainer after dish drainer gets it wrong. This one seems to get it right. It's a little thing we call gravity here on earth. You make a high side that drains down into a low side that drains into the sink. Many dish drainers are flat, or they collect the water but don't drain it, or they sit flush to the counter so the water pools. Aesthetics: This one is better in person than online, like all beautiful things. In selfies it looks cheap and tacky with the shiny black plastic, which may be why I kept passing over it in my exhaustive search. IRL it matches my stainless with black trim modern frig and range, as well as my Cuisinart coffee maker and toaster oven, its countertop brethren. I live in a log cabin with knotty pine kitchen, and this somehow works very well. It kind of disappears, my faithful dish draining servant. I'm writing this in hopes it guides future dish washers to a functional purchase. Don't be like me and spend hours of your life which you can never get back perusing dark corners of the internet in search of a simple wire box with a board that you can drain your dang dishes on. Now I'm off to my next adventure, just as soon as I find the perfect toaster...
